SAVE THE CAMBRIDGE: a petition launched to save an iconic live music venue

the Newcastle Live Music Task Forceincluding Newcastle MP Tim Crakanthorpsupport a petition asking Lienville reconsider the location of their planned development on the website of the Hotel.

“If the development continues, we will be on our way to rendering Newcastle null and void for the Australian music industry and beyond,” the petition reads.

“If Linkcity does not relocate its development, the Cambridge Hotel must be integrated into the future site plan.”

The proposed city center student accommodation development on the site will see the Cambridge Hotel close in June 2023.

While the prominent 1940s art deco building will be retained as part of the redevelopment, Linkcity said an approved place in student accommodation does not meet its aim of providing a safe sanctuary for young people who may be living away from home them for the first time. .

Petition supporters say the proposed development removes an iconic and vital part of Newcastle’s rich music history and scene and, if allowed to go ahead, would potentially open the door to the destruction of more rooms in the future.

“We want the city to progress, but we just can’t accept this particular proposal here!”
